AI for Megacity Pattern-of-Life Simulation

Bohemia Interactive Simulations is working to develop distributed artificial intelligence processing in collaboration with the University of Southern California Institute of Creative Technologies for a U.S. Army research project to simulate megacity pattern-of-life behaviors.

Without simulating civilian patterns of life at the megacity scale, you are left with an empty world that fails to represent the complexity of operating in such large-scale environments.

This technology allows millions of artificially intelligence entities (both vehicles and human characters) to be simulated in OneArc’s whole-earth rendering engine VBS Blue IG across the cloud or over multiple processing machines.

“Without simulating civilian patterns of life at the megacity scale, you are left with an empty world that fails to represent the complexity of operating in such large-scale environments,” said Oli Arup, OneArc’s vice president of product management.

“Our system is designed to spread the AI load over multiple processing instances to achieve the best possible simulation of megacity pattern of life with high stable frame rates to avoid impacting the user experience,” Arup explained.

Such simulations could help military commanders, strategists and planners more accurately visualize the big picture impact of large-scale events such as a city-wide terrorist attacks or invasions of heavily populated areas.

“We can simulate traffic management at citywide scales to understand how an incident might affect traffic flow and what their potential courses of action may be if they find themselves in a position where they could no longer move vehicles from one part of the city to another because of traffic congestion,” said Arup.
